Budget the complete clock
Miami and Key West are connected by the Overseas Highway, but traffic, pickup loops, rest stops, and the long distance make this a full-day commitment. Do not evaluate a product only by the advertised free time. Add your trip from the hotel to pickup, waiting, the outbound ride, optional-activity check-in, the return trip, and travel from drop-off back to the hotel.
| Plan | Works best when | Main cost |
|---|---|---|
| Guided bus day trip | You want a first look without driving | Fixed schedule and a very long shared day |
| Self-drive day trip | Route control matters and the driver accepts the return | Fatigue, parking, traffic, and no rest for the driver |
| Overnight | Sunset, evening atmosphere, or multiple activities matter | Lodging cost and an additional travel day |
A current transfer-included day trip
Use this product as a concrete benchmark for total duration, pickup, free time, and optional activities. It is not automatically better than an overnight plan.

Protect usable island time
A day-trip product may offer optional snorkeling, parasailing, trolley, glass-bottom boat, or other activities. An add-on can turn limited free time into a tightly scheduled sequence. Confirm the check-in point, activity duration, travel between stops, and what happens if the bus arrives late.
If the goal is simply to walk part of Old Town, see the waterfront, and have lunch, a transfer-only product may preserve more flexibility than a bundle. If the goal is an on-water activity, compare a dedicated overnight plan with the day-trip version instead of assuming the bundle saves time.
